SALGA NATIONAL WORKING GROUP REVIEWS ETHEKWINI TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE
A delegation from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) National Working Group visited the eThekwini Transport Authority (ETA) this week to gain insight into the City’s transport infrastructure progress.
The visit aimed to engage ETA on the implementation of the Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN), promote knowledge sharing, and exchange lessons learned that can inform municipal transport planning and operations in Durban.
The National Working Group, comprised of councillors from all nine provinces, deliberated on roads and transport functions that fall within municipal mandates.
The engagement also sought to strengthen collaboration between SALGA and the City on improving public transport systems, infrastructure development, the integration of transport modes, and enhancing accessibility and mobility within eThekwini.
ETA Acting Director Nelisiwe Zama highlighted the importance of a progressive and responsive public transport system. “It is crucial that we create a public transport system that places people at the centre of mobility. GO!Durban is eThekwini's Integrated Public Transport, not just a bus service. It is a transformative tool for unlocking economic and social growth for the City."
During the visit, the delegation attended a presentation on the revised GO!Durban Implementation Strategy, which aims to fast-track phase one routes of the IPTN.
The session was followed by a site tour of GO!Durban corridors, stations, stops, and systems to demonstrate how the service will operate.
SALGA Transport Specialist Unathi Mntonintshi praised the City’s progress.
He said: “We are excited by the developments. The City is clear on the different corridors and service types it intends to implement. SALGA is committed to assisting and collaborating with the City on GO!Durban and the broader transformation of public transport in the eThekwini region."
The engagement also allowed the National Working Group to identify best practices for replication in other municipalities, assess support for transport projects in relation to institutional and funding arrangements, and promote knowledge sharing on challenges and success in transport rollout initiatives.
