MAYOR XABA DRIVES HEALTHCARE ACCESS WITH REVAMPED DOROTHY NYEMBE CLINIC IN UMLAZI

In a significant stride towards improving access to quality healthcare, eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba today, 31 October officially opened the newly renovated Dorothy Nyembe Clinic in uMlazi G Section, Ward 79.

Joined by eThekwini City Manager Musa Mbhele and Chairperson of the City’s Community Services Committee Councillor Zama Sokhabase, Mayor Xaba described the project as a testament to the Municipality’s unwavering commitment to delivering dignified healthcare to all residents.

The R18 million upgrade of the facility included major infrastructure improvements, expanded capacity, and compliance with National Core Standards, in preparation for the rollout of the National Health Insurance.

The revitalised clinic will now serve more than 25 000 residents from uMlazi and surrounding areas.

Mayor Xaba hailed the clinic as a milestone for both the community and the Municipality.

“Our priority is to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to every resident, regardless of where they live. This clinic represents hope, progress, and our collective commitment to improving lives,” he said.

Mbhele echoed the Mayor’s sentiments, emphasising the Municipality’s focus on strengthening service delivery infrastructure, particularly in historically underserved communities.

“The upgraded Dorothy Nyembe Clinic will provide a conducive environment for healthcare workers and patients alike. We are building a system that prioritises people’s health and well-being,” said Mbhele.

Councillor Sokhabase said the clinic will provide a comprehensive Primary Health Care package to the community.

She also raised concern over the safety of healthcare workers.

“We have witnessed a worrying number of attacks, hijackings, and killings of our health officials and Municipal employees. Such actions cripple the delivery of healthcare services to communities,” she cautioned.

Ward 79 Councillor Khumbulani Cele expressed gratitude to the Municipality for prioritising the facility’s upgrade, noting its long-term benefits for residents.

The clinic operates Monday to Friday, from 07:30 to 16:00, ensuring easy access to essential health services for the uMlazi community.
