DISTRICT 6 CROWNED CHAMPIONS AT ETHEKWINI GAMES GRAND FINALE 2025

EThekwini Municipality’s Sports Development and Recreation Division successfully hosted the highly-anticipated eThekwini Games Grand Finale this past weekend, drawing enthusiastic crowds and showcasing the spirit of unity, talent, and sportsmanship.

Emerging as the overall champions, District 6, comprising Umlazi and surrounding areas, proudly claimed the coveted Golden Trophy during a vibrant closing ceremony.

The grand finale marked the culmination of weeks of intense competition across all wards in eThekwini, with top-performing teams advancing to represent their districts. The event brought together athletes from across the City, creating a dynamic platform for showcasing grassroots sporting excellence.

Adding prestige to the occasion were official sponsors MTN and Aquelle, alongside celebrated sports legends and special guests, all of whom underscored the tournament’s role in uplifting communities and promoting youth development through sport.

A total of 16 sporting codes were featured, including football (male and female), rugby, volleyball, cricket, netball, table tennis, dance, boxing, karate, chess, swimming, athletics, basketball, and indigenous games. 

The atmosphere was electric as families, supporters, and sports enthusiasts filled the grounds, cheering on their local heroes and celebrating community pride.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Chairperson of Community Services Committee, Councillor Zama Sokhabase, praised the athletes’ skill and determination.

“The eThekwini Games reflect the incredible talent and commitment of our young athletes. Through this initiative, we aim to unearth and nurture sporting potential, while fostering social cohesion, discipline, and healthy lifestyles. EThekwini is truly a sports hub, and we are building a brighter future for our youth,” she said.

Councillor Sokhabase also commended the dedication of coaches, parents, sports federations, and councillors, who continue to champion grassroots sports development.
