ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

 CITY TO HOST NATIONAL PLANNING INDABA

In partnership with various stakeholders, the City will host the National Planning Indaba at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) from 6 to 7 November.

Approximately 300 town and regional planners from across the country will converge in Durban to commemorate World Town Planning Day, which is celebrated annually on 8 November.

The Indaba is hosted in partnership with the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, the South African Local Government Association, the South African Planning Institute, the South African Council for Planners, and the Municipal Institute of Learning.

Planning plays a central role in addressing the multiple social, economic, and environmental challenges facing the world today.

World Town Planning Day celebrates how good planning empowers communities and provides pathways to prosperity for all.

The theme for this year’s World Town Planning Day is “With Planning We Can.”

Expert speakers will reflect on the state and importance of planning in the South African context.

Discussions will cover topics such as:

* Planning for traditional and rural areas to promote resilience and sustainability, including the perspectives of traditional leadership;

* Mainstreaming climate change and resilience in municipal planning; and

* The role of data and artificial intelligence in modern planning practices.
