R600 million planned for electricity infrastructure upgrades and reinforcements

Among the projects included in the Electricity Unit’s comprehensive plan is the KE Masinga Substation, pictured.

THE ELECTRICITY Unit is continuously working to ensure a reliable and consistent electricity supply for residents and businesses. A comprehensive plan for infrastructure development, focusing on electrical network refurbishment and upgrades, is currently underway. With a projected spend of about R600 million, the unit is gearing up to initiate several
projects across the City, some of which have been ongoing within the High Voltage and Medium Voltage branches.

Among the projects included in the unit’s comprehensive plan is the KE Masinga Substation. A budget of R11 million has
been earmarked for the final phase of this project, which will soon provide relief to the decommissioned City Central Substation. This will ensure a consistent and reliable electricity supply for the City’s central residential and commercial customers, including the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa, the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention
Centre, and the harbour.

With aging infrastructure and the increasing incidents of infrastructure vandalism and cable theft, strengthening the City’s electrical infrastructure has become a top priority. Over R25 million has been allocated to cable and switchgear replacement projects, such as one on Leister Road in Mobeni. These upgrades will enhance the electricity supply to surrounding areas like Lamontville, Montclair, Woodlands, uMlazi, and Yellowwood Park. Additionally, approximately

R20 million has been allocated to the Ekukhanyeni Informal Settlement’s electrification project, benefiting nearly 900
beneficiaries by the end of the year. Furthermore, a R4 million electrification project at the Dakota Informal Settlement will benefit 200 households. The remainder of the available spend will support projects on the ground which include cable replacement for major roadworks currently active across the City to high mast streetlighting, electrification and other electrical reinforcements.
