IN a historic move to honour King Shaka’s legacy and preserve his memory for future generations, President Cyril Ramaphosa together with King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba unveiled the new King Shaka statue at King Shaka International Airport on 7 November. President Ramaphosa said this monument will serve as a symbol of unity, strength, and pride for the people of KwaZulu-Natal as well as the entire nation. He said it was a celebration of King Shaka’s contributions to Zulu history, culture, and identity. e unveiling of the statue was followed by a meeting between the President, eThekwini Municipality TROIKA, and the eThekwini Presidential Working Group where President Ramaphosa was updated on the work being done to support and accelerate service delivery as well as improve business confidence and reposition eThekwini as an investment and tourism capital.

Mayor Xaba welcomed the meeting with the President saying the Working Group, which was established in February this year, represents an intergovernmental collaborative approach to addressing challenges in local government. “It involves active participation from all levels of government, the private sector, state-owned enterprises, organised labour, and civil society,” he said. On 8 November President Ramaphosa and members of national, provincial and local government were in Umnini where they interacted with the community and organised civil society formations during a Presidential District Development Model (DDM) Imbizo under the theme ‘Leave no one behind’. The Imbizo is a platform that allows residents to make proposals and highlight challenges they are experiencing directly to government leadership, who in turn respond with solutions to these challenges and outline what development plans they have for the community.
