Oversight visit to assess progress of key community residential projects
Chairperson of the City’s Human Settlements, Engineering, and Transport Authority Committee Councillor Themba Mvumbu impressed with the progress made on key Community Residential Unit (CRU) projects, valued at over R111 million.
CHAIRPERSON of the City’s Human Settlements, Engineering, and Transport Authority Committee Councillor Themba Mvumbu was impressed with the progress made on key Community Residential Unit (CRU) projects, valued at over R111 million. Councillor Mvumbu conducted an oversight visit to the Donnelly Road, KwaMakhutha, and uMlazi T CRU projects today, 18 November to assess progress and address any challenges.
He noted that the Municipality is making significant progress on all three projects, with only a few minor challenges experienced. “The R52 million Donnelly Road Housing Project, aiming at providing affordable housing in the south of Durban, bordering Wentworth and the Bluff, is now 80% complete. Upon completion, the project will yield 128 units,” said Councillor Mvumbu. He said the housing project in uMlazi T-Section has encountered a few minor challenges, but he was reassured by the contractor that substantial progress will be made by the first week of December. “Currently, the contractor is completing two of nine blocks on the ground floor. I am particularly pleased with the KwaMakhutha CRU, where significant progress has been made and the contractor is set to hand over the project to the Municipality before the end of November,” said Councillor Mvumbu.
He explained that once Council approves funds for projects, it is crucial for the Committee to conduct oversight to monitor the expenditure and progress of the projects. “Beyond following the money, it is imperative to ensure that work is executed according to specifications. As leaders, we must intervene when challenges arise,” concluded Councillor Mvumbu.
