DFO-funded projects nominated for prestigious awards
EXCITEMENT is in the air as two sensational film projects, funded by the Durban Film Office (DFO), have scored nominations at the highly anticipated Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards. The awards will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on 22 July.
The DFO’s Micro Budget Film Programme, a game-changing initiative that awards aspiring filmmakers with R250 000 to bring their visions to life, has given two local film producers support to realise their dreams. Filmmakers Simanga Cibane and Scelo Mamle have been recognised for their work which showcases Durban’s local talent. Both these shining stars received the DFO’s Micro Budget Grant for their captivating projects in 2018/19 and 2021/22, respectively. In the director’s chair, and also the mastermind behind the gripping storyline, Cibane presents “Ukhumbuzile” - a film currently on Mzansi Magic Channel 161. The compelling production garnered four impressive nominations, including; Best Made for TV Film, Best Use of KZN as a Filming Location, Best Supporting Actress Film and Best Newcomer Actress.
Incredible storyteller, Mamle, takes the helm in “Mantolwana Trip To to Durban.” This cinematic gem is captivating audiences on his very own streaming platform (MADIFA APP) and community centres. The Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards have recognised its brilliance with two nominations; Best Micro Budget Film and Best Made for TV.
