Assistance for fire victims in Clairwood

EThekwini Speaker Councillor Thabani Nyawose, MEC of Human Settlements and Public Works Sipho Nkosi, and Ward 32 Councillor Protas Mngonyama assessed an informal settlement in Clairwood after it was ravaged by fire.

ETHEKWINI Municipality will assist hundreds of destitute families after their shacks were destroyed by a fire on 10 November in Clairwood. Addressing the affected families, eThekwini Speaker Councillor Thabani Nyawose said the Municipality was working with relevant government departments to ensure that displaced families are relocated to a conducive environment. “We have a number of departments present, including the Office of the Premier, SASSA, Human Settlements, and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs among others to assist you with your identity documents and other important items that you lost in the fire.

We will also relocate displaced residents to another place,” said Councillor Nyawose. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube together with MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works Sipho Nkosi were also on site to assess the extent of the damage. The Premier expressed solidarity with affected residents and coordinated efforts for immediate relief and long-term recovery. On 10 November, a fierce fire engulfed the informal settlement in Clairwood, resulting in the destruction of over 200 informal houses.

The impact on residents and the community at large is severe. A disaster team from the City is assisting the displaced residents. MEC Nkosi said government has mobilised resources to provide emergency relief to those affected. Shelter, food, and other essential supplies are being arranged for displaced residents. The Premier will also be meeting with local authorities and emergency services to coordinate a comprehensive response plan.
