ETHEKWINI Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba visited the Kenville Informal Settlement where 236 households were destroyed by a fire that claimed the life of a pregnant mother. The fire broke out in the early hours of 14 July. Mayor Xaba was accompanied by eThekwini Deputy Mayor Councillor Zandile Myeni and Chairperson of the Governance and Human Capital Committee Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala.

Mayor Xaba assured the 400 displaced residents that the Municipality, working with all spheres of government, will provide them with much needed relief. Displaced residents have already been relocated to a temporary shelter and have been provided with food hampers. Social workers and healthcare workers are on site to provide psychosocial and healthcare services to the fire victims. The Department of Human Settlements has also profiled all affected households to assist with building materials.
